Innovative Investigation and Concrete Scanning of South Philadelphia Fire Department Prior to Renovation at Engine 49 on S 13th St in Philadelphia, PA

Project Description:

The engineering and construction design teams needed an inspection performed to overbuild and perform some renovations. The renovations included the design and installation of new drains, a new oil-water separator, as well as “tying into” existing sanitary lines. In order to do so, this required all the subsurface utilities to be accounted for with depths below the surface, to be able to pitch lines at the proper slope. This also required the existing storm and sanitary systems to be video pipe inspected, have the USTs accounted for, and make sure no unnecessary damages occurred during the re-design including identifying any abandoned or unknown systems and components on-site. Lastly, the client needed the “Concrete-XRAY” performed to determine the thickness, integrity, and reinforcements and locate any potential electrical conduits in the slabs to be “saw-cut”.

All lines and existing subsurface utilities and components were traced, oriented, and designated with depths below the surface for pitching the new sanitary line and tying into the sanitary line in the street. Existing UST and oil-water separators were oriented with dimensions and depths below the surface. A video pipe inspection was performed on the integrity of the existing drain and sanitary lines. American Geophysics was able to X-RAY the concrete and provide details of the concrete that needed to be “saw-cut” and re-designed in addition to providing different options and routes of available space for flexibility in the new designs. Any unknown or abandoned systems impacting their proposed routes to “tie into” existing utilities were also identified for the client.
